The Use of Affirmations in Personal Development

Capri Jones

Many authors of self help books declare that through the use of affirmations you can change your life. That just by simply repeating what you want you can draw it into your life. While I have found this to be true there is an part to the exercise often overlooked, the emphasis is placed on phrasing your affirmation positively and while that is important equally important is the negative reaction your sub-conscious produces to the newly introduced positive message. A powerful way to confront this is to write the affirmation and then next to it write the first negative thought that pops into your head. Then write the positive affirmation again and write the next negative reaction. Repeat until you no longer have a negative reaction to the positive thought you wish to create in your life. Depending on the affirmation you may need to repeat the whole exercise with the same or similar phrase- depending on the baggage associated with the idea.
